August

I’m back to August. Dignified, strong & handsome (do NOT start with me on how Month names are unisex unless you are willing to use May on a boy of yours!). yep, August is all manly for me, Augie & Gus are two lovely nickname options. I prefer Augie, but Gus is more mainstream should he want. And August honors my Mom, beloved Frances who hated her name, born 6 August 1940. I think it’s a subtle thing that she probably wouldn’t mind.Β  And she’d probably dig Gus. πŸ™‚

I came up with half a dozen combos as did He and between us, we narrowed the field to these 5. Which would you choose and why?

August James Tiberius (yes, I know, it’s kitschy, and geeky, but if I could make James Tiberius ___ flow with the surname I’d use it in a heartbeat and be thrilled. What a fabulous combo! and yes, I saw the new Star Trek movie and am so jazzed!)
August James Aloysius – a bit kitschier bit not as geeky.
August Julian Oliver – I’d rather Lucian, but August Lucian doesn’t sound as good as August Julian.
August Milo Aurelian – Aurelian’s awesome and I’m still stuck on Milo, but it’s too nicknamey for up front.
August Edward Bede – gets the honoring in there, and my beloved Bede.

Now August honors Mom, James honors not only Him, but my Pop’s oldest Brother (who’s still around) and Edward honors Mom’s brother, and my cousin (who I like much better than the Uncle). Milo is what Josie would have been had she been a boy, and I still like it very much. The rest are just fun.

So, what do you think? I’d love to know!

Oh, this is a tough one! I also love the name August (and Augustus, which is also a family name) but husband is not so fond… trying to sneak it in as a middle name…. Anyway, my favorite combo is August Milo Aurelian–all of those names are fabulous and sound excellent together. I guess the second pick would be the August james Tiberius, but I have to say that I have no idea how that is about Star Trek (just never really watched it) so maybe it would change my opinion if I did… I dunno πŸ˜‰ good luck!

Thanks Alison! I think August Milo Aurelian’s got the best flow, overall too. James Tiberius Kirk is the Captian of the original Star Trek series. I’ve been a fan of that since before I could walk, my Pop always said. Apparently Sci Fi is in my blood. πŸ˜‰ I’ve been telling my other half for years “I’d be thrilled with a James Tiberius of my own…” and until recently has answeed with a “been done” flat comment. Until about a week ago when he turned around and said “James Tiberius”, that’s a nice, solid classic with a cool Roman middle”. Men! Go figure. But I’m thilled to be allowed to at least play with the pair somewhere. I also have James Tiberius Bleys kicking around.

Also, I followed your link to your Etsy store, and I have to say, I love your bags! my birthday’s coming up… I’ll be keeping an eye on your place! πŸ˜€

I adore August! I think it’s incredibly masculine and strong, and I had a giggle at your May comment, Lola! I don’t get how month names are unisex or just for girls. The month of August is named after a masculine figure, anyway. But I digress…

August James Tiberius- This is really cool! Yeah, so it’s a bit geeky in theory, but it sounds so distinguished and strong. It beefs August up a bit, which I think is cool. I also am not bothered by the flow of the full name. Aloysius is great, too, but feels a little softer to me.

August Julian Oliver- I love this, too. Not as strong as James Tiberius, but very literary-sounding.

August Milo Aurelian- This sounds very distinguished, but I am not sure about the look and sound of August and Aurelian in the same combo for some reason.

August Edward Bede- August Edward is so great! Soft, strong, quirky, and steady. I love it.

Huzzah, someone who sees the merits of James Tiberius! I really do love the pairing, Captain Kirk notwithstanding. And I do know there are people who won’t “get it”, so I will use it, if I ever can.

August Milo Aurelian doesn’t bother me in terms of look, overall. I’m actually kind of jazzed that his initials would be AMAM! (or simply AMM). But my runner up is August Edward Bede. It’s just so handsome!

August Julian Oliver would please my Brother, Oliver is his second middle. He hates it but would love to see it on a nephew. He’s sad he has no kids himself.

I spent suppertime discussing August and his combos and it really has come down to a tie between August James Tiberius & August Edward Bede. We both like both, a fair bit. I suppose it’ll have to come down to one, eventually!

Thanks Bizzy, you just made my night!

I like August James Tiberius, too. I think it’s my favorite. I never really watched Star Trek, so I didn’t get the connection at all.

Like Bizzy, I’m bugged by the double “Au”s in August Milo Aurelian.

I do like August Edward Bede (Bede is so cool!), but I think August James Tiberius is even better.

August is one that I wish I could talk my husband into liking. I’m not fond of Augustus for some reason (just feels like too much, I guess), but I do so love August.

Thanks Polly! Aurelian’s becoming a tough sell name for me. He likes it, but it seems as though it’s just in theory, I can’t find anything to pair it with that he likes! πŸ™‚

To tell you the truth I’ve never contemplated August as a boys name. I have to tell you though that thinking about it i’m starting to like it. Its got a pleasent sound, its sweet and I think it goes well with other names making it easier to choose a middle name. Plus it goes great with Josephine because they are both distinguished names as well as similar lengths. Combinations I like- August James!! They go fanatsticly with each other. I think this name definately needs to be put close to the top of your list πŸ˜€

Laura, I think you nailed it. August feels like Josephine & Simon and Gus fits with Leo. I also think August is going to the top 5 soon. I really have to sit down with my current lists and revamp them!

August was on our short list, because he was a King of Poland. (My husband tells me he wasn’t a very good king – that was a stumbling block.) But I really, really like him.

August James Aloysius is my top pick, but I like August James Tiberius, too – geek chic in a good way!

Thanks Verity! With August appealing and honoring Mom, I think he’s a definite keeper for me. And as for August James Tiberius, with the kitschy Tiberius in thurd, I think it’s a safe one to use. I’m all for the Geek! πŸ˜‰

    Hi Lola,
You gave me some name suggestions over on “Names from Adam to Eve” and I just wanted to thank you for all your great ideas! You are amazing—I love the names (and combinations!) you come up with. Thanks so much for putting so much time and thought into that for me!

I love August, too (and Augustus)—so distinguished-sounding, but not too stern. And it reminds me of a girl name I’ve been thinking about lately: Aurelia. It is growing on me (with nns Ari and Lia?) but I like August (for a boy, of course) even better.

I haven’t been all the way back through your archives yet—are you expecting a baby right now, or just thinking of names for the future? Either way, good luck—and thanks for sharing your thoughts with the rest of us; I love reading your blog. πŸ™‚

You are most welcome Marilyn, I had a lot of fun brainstorming for you. Aurelia’s on my own lists as a possibility (I haven’t got the green light just yet), but we’d call her Goldie (in theory) as Aurelia means golden. Ari’s mannish for me (I know three guy Ari’s) and Lia’s the little Brasilian girl two doors down, one of my Josie’s friends. So I had to think further afield! I think Josephine & Aurelia are stunningly perfect together.

I’m not expecting at the moment, but definitely trying for one more. or at least hoping. πŸ™‚

    Lola,

I don’t know if I’m going crazy or what; I could have sworn I left a comment on this post a week ago. But I don’t see it here—so—I just wanted to tell you, thank you SO much for your help—you gave me some name suggestions on “Names from Adam to Eve” and I LOVE them! You are amazing—I love your ideas. Especially Jemima—wow—but lots of others. My husband and I spent the whole evening last Sunday discussing what we liked and didn’t like and we had a blast! πŸ™‚ I will let you know how our thinking develops. πŸ™‚

I really like the name August, and Augustus too actually. I think it’s strong without being overbearing, and then Gus is just cute. Thanks for sharing your thoughts—I always enjoy reading your posts! I haven’t gone all the way through your archives—are you pregnant right now, or are these just hypothetical names for later? Either way, good luck to you, and thanks again for all your help!

You did, Marilyn but as a new poster, you had to have your post approved (once I did one, the rest go through automatically). And my laptop bit the dust shortly after the first of the month, so I had to wait a bit til I could get a new one and get back to speed. Good luck to you, I am sure your fourth will have as fabulous a name as your other three!

Is Milo nicknamey? I’ve never thought of it that way. I love August Milo Aurelian – AMAM. August is great, too; of course I think of it is stumpy German and like thins like Franz August and Heinrich August and that kind of thing. DEFINITELY not unisex. One of the manliest names I can think of. And Laura’s right, it does go really well with the sibset

My favorite is August Edward Bede, by far. It is the perfect blend of styles IMO, and meshes really well with my synesthesia (yellowgold green blue. perfectly charming!) I… might nick it. Not for seriousness.

August James Tiberius is awesome. Jeez isn’t James Tiberius great. I think Augustus James Tiberius would be my personal pick.

Man you should use James Tiberius ____. I think it sounds great with the surname. James Tiberius, what, Wilder. And if people ever asked his middle name, and knew star trek, they would probably think it was awesome.

James Tiberius Wlder!?! Wow, Audeline, awesome! Thanks! August Edward Bede would be my runner up to August James Tiberius, August Edward Bede fits the pattern I have going with the other three kids But yeah, we’ll have to discuss both over brunch, which we’re heading out for in a few. So I will get to the rest of the posts after that! πŸ™‚
