Xanthe Redux

I am still crushing on Xanthe. I know, I know, she’s not the most fitting sister for Josephine but I adore Xanthe as much as Josephine. Also, if you crush on a name for more than a year, is it still a crush name? 😀

Either way, I still adore Xanthe and thought to try her out paired with another, longer love: India. I’d much rather India in the middle where her overtones are hidden a bit. Next to Xanthe, India shines for me.

Here are a handful of combos I came up with earlier, what do you think of them?

Xanthe India June
Xanthe India Lenore
Xanthe India Violet (maybe too much color?)
Xanthe India Annabel
Xanthe India Margaret
Xanthe India Rosamund
Xanthe India Gwendolyn

Anything jump out at you?

Just wondering. I’d love to hear thoughts on Xanthe, Xanthe India & the full combos I’ve got. Anyone? 🙂

As always, thanks a million for reading!

Happy Memorial Day to all!

So there. Enjoy your BBQs, picnics or potlucks. I’ve got a BBQ planned for tonight but am kicking back and relaxing. Reminiscing about the Vets in my family, My Uncle Jim, a Vietnam vet, My Pop, an Air Force vet (he was in before Vietnam, was married with a  kid on the way when it started so he got left out, lucky me!). Grandpop was in the Navy for WW2, My Aunt May was a WAVE.  My OH was an Army guy for 10 years but is thankfully home safe and staying home these days.  I hope you & yours are Safe & Happy today.  🙂

So I was being weird yesterday  and posted a poll at BtN, Thinking about a few names specifically that I like with Josephine. Here’s what I posted, and the total # of votes each got, following:

Josephine & ? Which would you like to see most?

Josephine & Helen: 8
Josephine & Frances: 13
Josephine & Violet: 22
Josephine & Elinor: 8
Josephine & Cecily: 18
Josephine & Jemima: 11
Josephine & Imogen: 7
Josephine & Winifred: 11
Josephine & Ottilie: 12
Josephine & Edith: 6

What do you think of the final outcome? Which would you have voted for (it was a pick all you like poll) and tell me, am I still crazy for loving Ottilie and wanting her in first place?  Talk to me, tell me whatever you think, I’d love to hear!

Araminta & Jemima – the battling girls

I don’t think I’ve brought her up much recently but she’s climbing my list rather quickly, I am completely charmed by her sound and her color, which is silvery-white.   I like that she’s a literary name; she fits in the group with Zuleika for me. I’m also charmed by her multiple nicknames. No Minty here (She’s a “My Little Pony“!) but rather Minna or Mina, or like Josephine, Araminta in full.  I think she sounds awesome next to Josephine too, just look at them together:

                         Josephine & Araminta

How lovely they are!

I’m also quite enchanted with her combo: Araminta Alice Green. It’s warm, friendly and the Green actually makes me love the combo. The color of them together is awesome, Silvery-whitewhite-gold and pale spring green. They’re beautiful!  The combo of Araminta & Green  is linked in my head to some degree. Methinks  I read far too much sometimes!  😀  I don’t think Green does any harm in third like that either, so don’t bother complaining about it. 😛 It’s rather like Maud India or Elinor Glory, they just belong together in my head.  🙂

Now for Jemima. I live in the good ‘ol USA (despite the way I sound when I type) and have all my life. I’ve loved Jemima since I was a kid, yes I was raised by a mix of Roman Catholic (Mom)  and Protestant (Pop). Between the two of them, I went to church every Sunday and also read the Bible regularly. Dad was big on “read it and act, don’t just lip-worship” And while I do come across as snooty, I’m quite far from it, for real.  I only within the last 10 years realised it was a pancake/breakfast food brand here (I do not eat pancakes, ever and utterly loathe maple syrup).  I still love Jemima despite that and really don’t think it’s that big a deal. I mean, people name girls after Diseases: Alexia & Addison and Minivans: Sienna & Sedona (I know one, really!), what’s a pancake mix?  I know about her earlier advertising (I worked in the field for a number of years) and while I find it distasteful, I see no reason why it should keep anyone from using the name now. Using it, rather than keeping it off limits, to me, is showing that I disagree with the origins and find it lovely enough to use.  Not using it isn’t respecting it, it’s like I’m ashamed and want to hide that we were awful. I won’t do that.

I am also charmed by her combo: Jemima Frances Ruby. it’s all warm violets & reds to me.  Jemima’s the loveliest violet shade, Frances is a dusty red And I’ve described Ruby  before, suffice to say, the deep gemstone color of her sets off both Jemima & Frances most beautifully (I think I’m channelling “Bill & Ted” tonight).

I cannot decide which one to put in my #10 spot, Silvery-gold-green Araminta Alice Green or Violetty-red Jemima Frances Ruby, so I’d like to ask you, my readers to tell me which one you’d rather see in my #10 spot (or possibly higher) and, if you don’t mind, why? I’d appreciate it most mightily!

 Thanks!

My Favorite Old Folks

I like old people, always have. I had more fun hanging out with my Grandmother and her sisters, their husbands and their friends as a kid, even.

Never said I wasn’t odd! 😀

Some of them are back now: Lillian/Lilian & Caroline (never left), John and Josephine’s on her way.  While the rest of them are becoming rather obscure or in danger of vanishing completely: Arthur, Roland, Warren, Harvey, Clarence, Philip/Phillip and Leslie on a boy. Frances, May, Sylvia, Florence, Margery.

Helen, Margaret & Edward are the only three falling but not in danger of vanishing just yet.

All of those names are family names for me (if you hadn’t guessed)

I’ve been thinking about them, the old folks I used to know (they’re all long gone now). I wonder of any of their names will come back?   I think most of them are neat. Arthur & Roland and knightly and dashing, Philip/Phillip feels princely (maybe I’ve watched too much “Sleeping Beauty? Hmm)? 😉   Warren feels artsy and creative to me, Harvey feels almost happy, Clarence is warm and softly handsome and I so wish Leslie had stayed boy. I mean Lesley is the girly version, why did they take Leslie? Poor GrandPop!
May is sweetly charming, Frances is zippy and sweet, and Florence fits in with the place name girls. I’m surprised actually, that Sylvia hasn’t popped up yet. She’s simple yet three syllables, has a ‘v’ and a ‘y’ and seemingly fits in with the Audrey/Ava/Vivian crowd.

I’ve also been wondering how medieval Margery might come across by herself or maybe as an alternate nickname for Margaret?  I’ve always been a sucker for ancient names and medieval names fit that nicely.  Margery, Edith, Cecily, Beatrix, Amabel, Clarice (I’ve loved Clarice since I was a tot!), Euphemia, Florence, Helen, Lettice/Leticia, Matilda & Maud are some very favorites. I could have a dozen girls and happily name them the previous names.

What do you think of old people’s names? What are your thoughts on medieval names and their possible use today?
