May and her spicier variants

My Great Aunt May was a fabulous woman. Married months before WW1, widowed during, never remarried. Had a blast travelling the world and became a patron of the arts. Some of my earliest memories are of being at old Newark airport, waiting for her to arrive. Well, her or the Grandparents.  I’ve been told repeatedly by the family that she is the member I am most like. Which is cool, she was an awesome lady. But I know she always felt her name was too gentle and demure for her and while I like May exactly as she is, I was thinking “What would be a good way to spice May up, in a way May might like”?

So I went digging and came up with these variants that appeal in various ways:

Marigold
Marguerite/Maisie
Margery/Maisie
Amabel
Marian
Maybelle/Mabel (more Maybelle than Mabel, which reminds me of maple syrup: blech)

I thought about relating May to Mary (hence how Marian & Marigold got on this list). And if that works, I could also use Marilyn, for that lovely, living Auntie of mine.

But maybe my best bet is either Marguerite, nn Maisie (sound honoring) or just May. I considered Marguerite for Josephine briefly but in the end, just didn’t like it enough to keep it on the lists. I still do like it but am wondering if I like it enough. Somehow, I’m not sure I do. Maybe I should just think about May, alone. I’m not fond of May up front, so maybe in the middle somewhere?

What do you think of simple May and potentially, Margery nn Maisie?   Any of the others?  Worth trying to pair or no?

Ottoline again

I’m still loving Ottoline. I know she doesn’t appeal to the masses but I don’t care. I love it. And if I love it, she will.

My long standing combo of choice is Ottoline Alice Marigold. I love it but I’m waffling a bit on the whimsy. Ottoline’s different; is adding Alice Marigold going to make her miserable at 16? Marigold means something enough that she charms me and maybe that, being known to her will help her to like it too.

On those maybes, I thought maybe I should rethink Ottoline combos. So I went to my notebooks & lists and re-found:
Ottoline Lucy Maud. I like proper Maud next to dancy Lucy and I like them both next to frilly Ottoline. (yes, I know they’re linked, literally). They’re beautiful together, why not use them again, especially if they mean more than the literary connection to me?

I’ve also come up with two polls worth: Ottoline 1  & Ottoline 2 .  (if you feel like voting)

I like these best from both polls:

Ottoline Ruby Adele
Ottoline Ruby Elinor
Ottoline Lucy Maud
Ottoline Elinor Rose
Ottoline Carys Elinor
Ottoline Alice Marigold
Ottoline Ivy Frances

As you can see OLM & OAM are still in there. But I was tossing around those little names that float around my family (Elinor, Frances, Maud) or just mean something to me (Ruby, Alice, Ivy, Rose, Marigold) and the few that just appeal  (Adele, Carys).

Like I said, I know Ottoline is not something that very many people like at all. But try to be open minded. 😀  Which of these do you like best? Or should I just stick with Ottoline Alice Marigold?

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Ottoline & Ottilie

Sorry for the lull, I got surprised with a short vacation. It’s been so long since the last one and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Just got back this afternoon!

She’s alternately my #1 or #2 name. I love her sound: ah-TEE-lee or ah-toe-LEEN. So delicate & sweet but not the slightest bit soft.

Ottilie’s an old name too. Her height was in 1882, at #416. Ottoline, on the other hand, has never ranked and is more or less, a one person name: Ottoline Morrell (Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck Morrell) a 19th century society hostess. A very open minded one. A personal heroine of mine. Her daughter had Ottoline as a middle name, herself. (I have no clue if she used it often or not, though)

She’s also a character in a children’s mystery series, “Ottoline Brown” is her name. I found a stuffed bear named Ottoline online but have no clue where she comes from. She’s so cute! Here:

Ottoline’s got a lovely sound, a beautiful look and will definitely stand out in the sea of Emily/Emma/Isabella/Madison/Ava/Sophias out there.  I think she’s absolutely aces and I love her combo: Ottoline Alice Marigold. I adore sunny Marigold next to refined Alice. They’re just perfect with the gorgeous Ottoline.
